Science Week 2018 at Buckingham Prep was a raging success! Our theme of ‘Space and Geology’ set the tone for the week to come.
The week kicked off with an anticipated visit by the GeoBus from the UCL educational outreach program. The workshops varied from topics such as fossils, earthquakes, volcanoes and even meteorites! The workshops were hands on and allowed inquiry using the scientific method and the investigative spirit! Reception to Year 2 spent time using dough and templates to create their own fossils. Year 3 and 6 went head-on into the session learning about earthquakes and what creates them. They even had a chance to create their own structure and test whether it could withstand a real earthquake. Year 4 extended their learning and used reactive chemicals to simulate what happens when the pressure of molten rock builds up below the Earth’s surface. Years 5 and 6 enjoyed their instruction into the lone world of meteorites.
The first day came to a completion with our guest speaker. Mr Aslam, a practising ophthalmologist, took time out of his busy schedule to talk to Years 3-6 about the study of eyes, light and how research into this field helps us to understand the eye with a better vision!
Dr Hobbs, a guest speaker from Haberdashers School, spent time doing some interesting and explosive demonstrations with Years 5 and 6.
The boys had a fun-filled Science Week from observations and investigations in the classroom, to watching dazzling demonstrations! In addition to this, Years 4-6 watched the film ‘Hidden Figures’, a film about brilliant African American women who served as the brains behind the launch into orbit of astronaut John Glenn.
The finale was a prize-giving ceremony for the most ingenious project based on the homework challenge that dealt with Space and an eventual mission to Mars! I can’t wait for next year’s Science Week as this year’s was a blast! Stay curious and love the world you live in!
