MUSIC
Music is enjoyed by all at Buckingham Preparatory School and taught to all classes by a music specialist teacher on a weekly basis. We sing in assemblies and have an after school choir practice each week.
The choir performs throughout the year at all school events.
All children are encouraged to take up a musical instrument and they are taught by a highly competent and qualified team of peripatetic teachers.
There are numerous opportunities to perform, either playing in assembly, playing in the class instrumental group and playing in our Expressive Arts Week.
DRAMA
Drama is looked upon as being an essential component of life of Buckingham Preparatory School. We believe that drama enriches the lives of people, and so we wish to involve as many children as possible in drama activities.
The Infants (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) perform a Christmas play in the School Hall.
A Year 6 leavers play is performed at the end of the Easter Term.
All year groups present an assembly to which parents are invited to attend.
As well as drama being part of our whole school curriculum we also use Rough Magicke Drama which offers individual Speech and Drama classes at BPS; working towards LAMDA exams in acting, poetry, literature and public speaking. The exams are ultimately about empowerment; giving students the opportunity to develop the life skills they need, attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate clearly and present ideas. The classes complement your child’s progress in Drama and English, and develop public speaking skills.
Classes are designed to:
- Build confidence in public speaking and performance
- Foster a love of literature, poetry and the arts
- Improve communication skills and develop interview technique
- Expand vocabulary and improve elocution
- Nurture creative development
In a 30-minute lesson each week, pupils can perform acting monologues, practise poems, read book extracts and write and deliver speeches. Pupils work closely with their teacher to develop presentation skills, interview technique, and day-to-day communication. Students work towards LAMDA exams, and are also offered the chance to participate in local drama festivals, and our in-house showcases.
LAMDA has been recognised as an awarding organisation by Ofqual, and the top grades carry UCAS points, useful for University applications.
